We often point fingers at poor infrastructure or weak law enforcement. But if we peel back the layers, an uncomfortable truth emerges: The chaos on our roads is simply a mirror reflecting what is breaking down inside our homes and our society.
When we strip away empathy, patience, and accountability behind the wheel, we are not just creating traffic jams but we are raising a generation that grows up believing that power overrides human life.
1. The Real Tragedies: When Parental “Pride” becomes a nightmare
Underage driving in India rarely starts with revolt but it starts with parental indulgence. We see parents proudly handing over the keys of heavy bikes or high speed cars to their 15 - 16 years old children to travel to the tuition classes, coaching centers, or late-night social gatherings. It is often treated as a milestone, a moment of pride that “my child is growing up and driving now.”
But look at what this indulgence costs us?
We all remember the horrifying Pune Porsche incident, where an unlicensed, intoxicated 17 year old driving a multi-crore luxury car at terrifying speeds took the lives of two young, hardworking IT professionals in a single second. Two promising lives, two families shattered forever all because adults provided the vehicle, the money and the illusion that consequences do not apply to them. Across India, whether in metro cities or small towns, similar tragedies happen daily away from the headlines.
When parents hand keys to a minor, they aren't bestowing freedom. They are handing over a two-ton weapon to a mind that is legally and emotionally unprepared to handle it.
2. Social Media influence and Stunts: Risking lives for Views
Roads are shared spaces for commuting safely, but they are increasingly being abused as stages for personal vanity:
- Reel Making and Road Stunts : Young drivers and adults alike take hands off handlebars, perform dangerous stunts, or hold phones to capture videos on busy roads solely to gain views, followers, or social clout.
- Spreading Fear and Negative influence: These stunts do not just cause physical accidents but they deeply affect people on the road in a negative way. Older commuters and families feel frightened, while impressionable youngsters watching these reels absorb the false idea that breaking rules makes you ‘cool’.
- The Consequences : A split second of distraction to capture a camera angle or impress strangers on the internet can cause irreversible loss to innocent lives.
3. The Science of 18: Why the law sets a boundary
The legal driving age of 18 is not any random number pulled from thin air. It is grounded in human biology, psychology, and motor-skill development:
- Cognitive and Hand Eye Coordination: Safe driving relies on complex brain functions like calculating relative speeds, anticipating another driver's sudden turn, timing a safe lane change, and making split second decisions under pressure. Before adulthood, the prefrontal cortex {the area of the brain responsible for impulse control and risk assessment is still actively developing}.
- Understanding Space and Patience: True road sense means understanding that if a vehicle ahead is signaling to turn right, you ease off the accelerator, give them space, and wait for your turn. It is not about speeding up to block them or honking furiously to assert dominance.
- Power versus Responsibility: A larger car or a louder engine does not give anyone superior ownership of the road. Roads are shared public spaces where a person on a bicycle, a pedestrian on foot, and a luxury vehicle share the exact same right to safety.
4. The Passenger Seat Classroom: The Silent Lessons Children Absorb:
Long before a child ever touches a steering wheel, they spend years in the passenger seat watching their elders. It is not only affecting the children but also other family members sitting inside the vehicle:
- Trauma for Family Members: When a driver steps out of the car to scream, abuse, or fight with another driver, the spouse, children, or elderly parents sitting inside feel immense anxiety, fear, and embarrassment. What was supposed to be a peaceful family journey turns into a traumatic experience.
- Internalizing Bad Lessons :
- a) When a parent honks continuously at a red light, the child learns that patience is weakness.
- b) When a parent uses abusive language, the child absorbs that shouting is how you get your way.
- c) When a parent breaks a red light or argues with traffic police, the child learns that rules are optional.
When these children grow up, they do not drive with care or patience but they drive with the hostility and entitlement they witnessed throughout their upbringing.
5. Aggression, Insurance, and creating a “Cloud of Fear”
- Targeting the Weaker Ones: When a minor nudge occurs, drivers in larger or luxury vehicles often get down and instantly attack the weaker commuter whether it is a scooter rider, an auto driver or a cyclist.
- Ignoring Insurance for Ego: Almost every car owner carries vehicle insurance specifically designed to cover accidental damages easily. Yet, instead of handling things legally and calmly through insurance, people choose violence and verbal abuse.
- Creating a Cloud of Fear: Very often, this explosive aggression is not even about the small dent on the car. People deliberately scream, shout, and create a scene to build an artificial “cloud of fear” around themselves trying to dominate the victim, intimidate bystanders, and show off power.
When children witness an adult using a minor accident to terrorize someone less privileged, they learn that power excuses cruelty.
6. The Loss of Empathy: From Bumper - to - Bumper traffic to broken families:
This erosion of civic sense on the road carries terrifying real - world consequences that ripple across society:
- Driving on the Edge of Intoxication: Drinking and driving is the ultimate expression of selfishness. It stems from a mindset that says “ My night of fun is more important than the lives of everyone else on this road”.
- Destroying entire Families: On Indian roads, many commuters like delivery partners, daily wage earners, or sole breadwinners are the single financial pillar for their entire families. When a reckless driver injures or kills that person, an entire family loses their shelter, food, education, and future overnight.
- Losing Human Kindness: Why do people hesitate to help someone lying injured on the road? Because when we lose civic sense, we lose basic human empathy. We treat someone else’s life and death emergency as an inconvenience or an online content opportunity.
7. How Road Behavior Spills into the Rest of our Lives
The impatience and hostility we practice on the road do not stay on the road. They leak into every corner of our daily existence:
- In the Workplace: A person who cannot wait for their turn in traffic becomes a colleague who interrupts others in meetings, cuts corners, and lacks the patience to listen.
- In Public Spaces: The culture of jumping traffic lights becomes the culture of cutting queues at hospital counters, airports, and billing desks.
- In Personal Relationships : When we normalize shouting, abusive language, and quick -tempered reactions behind the wheel, we carry that same irritability and lack of emotional control back into our living rooms, affecting our spouses, elderly parents, and children.
The Responsibility Starts Within
Teaching good manners and civic sense to the next generation cannot be done through lectures, moral science classes, or courtroom judgments. It begins with self-correction:
- Saying ‘No’ is an Act of Love: Withholding vehicle keys from a minor child regardless of their pleas or social pressure is not strictness, it is protection!
- Control Your Temper in Traffic: The next time a motorist cuts you off, or a light turns green, take a deep breath. Refrain from honking unnecessarily. Choose calm over rage and protect your accompanied family from embarrassment and fear.
- Remembering You Are Always being watched: Your children, your younger siblings, and society at large are observing how you handle power, anger, and responsibility when you are behind the wheel.
Before we demand a better world, better roads, or better citizens, let us look at how we drive, how we treat others, and what example we are setting. True civic sense is not given by law but it is lived by choice.
Stay tuned, share this with your family and community, and let us begin the conversation at home.
