India Achieves Historic Lunar South Pole Landing with Chandrayaan-3 Mission
In a momentous achievement, India has secured its position as the first nation to successfully execute a lunar south pole landing through the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Embarking on a 40-day voyage from the Sathish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a remarkable milestone. The Vikram lander of the Chandrayaan-3 mission gracefully touched down on the Moon's surface at 6.04 PM IST on August 23.
Initiating the critical phase at 5.44 PM IST, ISRO initiated the automatic landing sequence. Guided by its onboard computers and sophisticated logic, the Vikram lander meticulously maneuvered for a soft lunar landing. While the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) vigilantly monitored the process, the lander's autonomous systems orchestrated the intricate task, signifying a momentous stride in India's space exploration competence.
Succeeding the Chandrayaan-2 mission in 2019, marred by the Vikram lander's crash landing, Chandrayaan-3 aimed to reaffirm ISRO's prowess in achieving a soft Moon landing—a feat mastered by only a handful of nations. With this triumph, India now joins the exclusive league comprising the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as the sole countries to conquer this challenging endeavor.
